The idea that the shotgun was something big and strong to end the night on is not consistent with the reality of how poor the shotgun is as a military fighting weapon. I know the director just wants to get his beloved 3gun shotgun into the film but if that's the case then you need to come up with a better justification for it than what was given. In John Wick 2 it's the choice of using a shotgun for the final battle is a stain on a movie that was otherwise full of pretty good choices on weapons and tactics. To someone who doesn't know much about guns and military combat it might not sound like a big deal - but to someone who knows about that stuff some of Wick's decisions about guns and tactics make about as much sense as him pulling out a black powder musket or blunderbuss as his weapon of choice when he has many superior modern options he could choose instead. #2 made a big mistake in this way, but #3 was even worse. The problem? Gun choices that would be absolutely stupid for someone who is supposedly an expert in gunfighting to make. But there was a major glaring error in John Wick 2 that stood out like a stain on the film's logic, and in John Wick 3 there are two errors so bad that it jars me out of suspending disbelief and it becomes harder to focus on just enjoying the movie. And to a large extent John Wick 3 hits the mark well too. What otherwise would have been just another revenge plot action movie that I ignored suddenly became a movie that intrigued me based on it's reputation of well thought out creative gunfighting that still managed to be anchored more in reality than typical action movies in terms of the tactics and techniques used.įor the most part I wasn't disappointed in how John Wick 1 and 2 delivered on that. You have to understand that the only reason I even had a desire to watch the first John Wick was because of my interest in practical shooting skills and sports (which comes out of interest in military combat) and seeing an online video of Keanu crushing a 3gun practice session. But there's one major flaw with the movie that really left a sour taste in my mouth about it from a storytelling logic and character standpoint. I must preface this by saying it's a well made movie, creative, original, interesting, with a lot of good effort put into realistic fight mechanics, and I love Keanu Reeve's work.
